KP Ecology Ltd was founded in June 2011 by Dr Katie Pollard MCIEEM. Originally from Cambridge, Katie has a Ph.D. in Applied Insect Ecology from The University of Southampton, an M.Sc. in Toxicology from the University of Birmingham and a B.Sc. in Pure & Applied Ecology from The University of Sheffield. She has over 25 years experience as an ecologist.
Since setting up the consultancy in 2011, Katie is and has been involved with a wide range of projects, including the successful 'Winning the Allen' Landscape Recovery Project 2024 (ongoing), river restoration projects within the river Avon catchment with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, flood defence schemes with the Environment Agency, Ecosystem Services research on hedges for Natural England and Defra, social housing schemes for BCP Council, school building projects, building conservation schemes, bat training courses for CIEEM, domestic and commercial ecology surveys for planning, environmental monitoring and audits and ecological mitigation and enhancements.
Previously, Katie worked for 10 years as one of the county ecologists at Dorset County Council, advising on all matters related to planning and ecology, undertaking habitat and species surveys and providing training for planners, highways engineers, property management, works teams and contractors. She worked closely with Natural England, DEFRA, the Environment Agency and various NGOs, in particular Dorset Wildlife Trust and Dorset Environmental Records Centre. Prior to working at Dorset County Council, she was a freelance consultant in the Entomology Department at the Brisbane Museum, Queensland, Australia.
Katie was a Trustee of Dorset Environmental Records Centre for eight years and a member of Dorset Biodiversity Officer Group whilst working at Dorset County Council. She continues to sit on Hedgelink (National Hedgerow Habitat Group - DEFRA) as a representative for the Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Trust (and formerly for the Association of Local Government Ecologists). She is a full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management (MCIEEM) and the current Training Officer for Dorset Bat Group.
